Manchester United bid to win their first trophy under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer. They take on La Liga's Villarreal in the final of the Europa League and are the worthy favourites. United finished second in the English Premier League this season and didn't lose a single away fixture. Sunday saw them win 2-1 at Wolves to ensure that was the case but it was a virtual reserve team that played at Molineux. Their top players have been rested for this final and that will obviously help them. United began the season in the Champions League but finished third behind PSG and RB Leipzig, so were moved to the Europa League. It's a competition they have won once and reached the last four last season. This term has seen them win five out of eight games, two drawn and the only loss away to Roma. They have scored 12 goals in their last four games in this competition and Villarreal are going to have problems dealing with the power of United's midfield and forwards.
Villarreal finished seventh in La Liga and have made it into the new Europa Conference League. They'd much prefer to be in the Champions League though and that is the carrot dangling in front of their nose. Their league season ended with a 2-1 loss at Real Madrid on Saturday, a game in which they also made a few changes from the side that won 4-0 at home to Sevilla. Villarreal have had to play 14 games to get through to this final. They won their group by five points taking them into the knock-out stages. Seven of their eight knock-out games have been won with victories over Salzburg, Dynamo Kiev, Dinamo Zagreb and Arsenal. Only the away second leg at Arsenal wasn't won, that ended goalless taking Villarreal through 2-1. In all competitions, only one of their last four away games have been won. That was at Real Valladolid who were relegated at the weekend. Back Manchester United to win this final.
