Wales host Austria in a World Cup play-off semi-final. The winners of this match will have to wait until June to find out who they'll play in the final. The other two countries in this path are Scotland and Ukraine whose semi-final has been postponed for obvious reasons. Not since 1958 have Wales made it to the World Cup finals. They have had good results in both the European Championships and Nations League but it's a long overdue trip to the World Cup finals that they want. Wales finished second behind Belgium in the group stages but did go unbeaten at home. Their away form isn't so good so the fact that this semi-final and a final will be home matches really boosts their chances of qualifying. Seven of their last eight World Cup home qualifiers have seen under 2.5 goals scored. They only scored 14 goals in their eight group games and eight of those came against Belarus. Gareth Bale has missed a few games for Real Madrid of late but the hope is that he'll be fit to play in this vital home game.
Austria finished fourth in their group behind Denmark, Scotland and Israel and seven points behind second place. They really are lucky to still be in the World Cup. They only made it to the play-offs because of their Nations League winning their League B group in the 2020/21 Championships. Their away form is a worry with only the Faroe Islands and Moldova beaten in their group. Austria lost 5-2 in Israel and Wales can be backed to get a win against them to reach the play-off final and just one step away from ending that 64 year wait to reach the World Cup finals.
