Matchday 27 of the Bundesliga sees 12th place Wolfsburg host a Bayer Leverkusen side looking to solidify their place in the top three and secure Champions League football as we approach the home stretch of the league campaign. It’s been a tough week for Gerardo Seoane and his Leverkusen side, crashing out of the Europa League after suffering defeat to Atalanta in both legs and failing to find the net in a 1-0 home loss against Koln in a match that they dominated. They’re still in the midst of a successful season and the three points here would go a long way to helping Die Werkself secure a spot in the Champions League for the first time in three seasons. On the other side of the field, Wolfsburg have had a disappointing year after finishing in the top four last season. Die Wolfe finished bottom of their Champions League, one that many considered to be up for grabs, and now look like they may struggle to even finish in the top half at the end of the season.
Wolfsburg’s form has been patchy lately, going 3-2-5 in their last 10 fixtures, and are coming off a 3-2 away loss to Freiburg. They will be buoyed by their scoring form though, as the hosts have now found the net in six straight matches after struggling at times earlier in the season to maintain consistent scoring output. The visiting Leverkusen come into this match banged up and on short rest, making this a potentially very tricky fixture. 18-year-old wonderkid Florian Wirtz went down for the rest of the season recently with an ACL injury while leading scorer Patrik Schick’s status is still in doubt after missing the last month with a calf injury. These are certainly big injuries for Leverkusen but they do still boast a deep squad and have a very good chance to end their three match losing streak in this match.
