Chelsea have had their bad days, and will be hoping to do better when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday in the league. A tough season for both sides has Chelsea in ninth, four places behind Spurs, with both still harboring European hopes. After three straight games away from home, Chelsea will be looking to bounce back here. A 1-0 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup semis started their three-game winless rut. The Blues would then endure a 5-0 rout at Arsenal before drawing 2-2 with Aston Villa in their latest Premier League games. What would have been a great comeback against Villa was stopped by the VAR after Axel Disasi’s late goal was disallowed. The recent poor run has left Chelsea five points off the final European slot for England. Their last win – the only win in five matches – came at home, which explains why the Blues will be happy to take this at Stamford Bridge. They haven't lost any of their last six home matches in all competitions, winning five. Each of those six home matches had over 2.5 goals though only one of eight had a clean sheet.
Two weeks out of action wasn’t enough for Spurs to prepare for Arsenal. Their bitterest rivals handed them a 3-2 home beating, leaving their Champions League hopes hanging by a thread. The visitors are here on a tour of redemption, having not only lost their last two matches, but conceding seven goals in the process. A 4-0 demolition at Newcastle United must be enough to remind them of the 4-1 defeat the last time they faced Chelsea. That, followed by conceding three times in the first half against Arsenal points to how poor they are defensively. Being seven points behind the top-four means there’s limited room for error. The only silver lining for Spurs will be that they have two games in hand on fourth-placed Villa. This then, should be a game they use to close in on Villa, even though the loss to Arsenal means their top-four ambitions are no longer in their control. The North London side has one win only in their last nine matches against Chelsea, which further complicates matters.
These two sides aren’t in their best runs of form and it doesn’t help that they’ve been conceding a lot. However, playing at home, Chelsea will have the upper hand in this derby. The Blues are unbeaten in six home matches, and face a Spurs side struggling away from home. Our prediction for Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur is for Chelsea to win and the game to have over 2.5 goals.
