Coventry City and Manchester United will put their league assignments aside to face off in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday. This will be the second semi-final, with the winner set to meet either Chelsea or Manchester City. With both sides struggling in their respective leagues, the FA Cup is a welcome distraction. Coventry suffered their 13th league loss in their last outing, falling 3-0 to Birmingham City. With their chase for a top-six finish suffering in recent times, the FA Cup offers the needed solace. They will be happy to test themselves against some of the best in English football. In the last round, Coventry City eliminated a Premier League side, Wolverhampton Wanderers and will hope lightning strikes twice. The last time Coventry faced United was in 2007, in a League Cup game the Sky Blues won. However, they aren’t in the shape to repeat the feat, having lost three of their last four matches. One area of concern for the Championship side heading to Wembley will be their defence. In the last 11 matches they managed just two clean sheets and, in that run, they conceded two or more in six games. Failing to score in just one of their last 17 away matches is, however, a reason they’ll be pumped up.
Manchester United, like Coventry City, are also struggling to reach their league goals for the season. The Red Devils are currently seventh in the Premier League, 13 points below the top-four and in danger of missing the Champions League spot. A 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in their last outing left them winless in four matches, further frustrating their league ambitions. This fixture provides an opportunity for United to forget their league woes, while also chasing a place in Europe. The FA Cup, being their only chance at silverware and best avenue to Europe, they will definitely come with the requisite seriousness. That will however not mask the fact that they’ve been poor defensively, conceding two or more in six of their last nine matches. In their last 11 matches, United managed just two clean sheets. They have three in 11 FA Cup matches while both teams scored in 12 of their last 15 matches.
Two sides that have been struggling defensively are set to meet in the second semi-final of the FA Cup. Both Manchester United and Coventry haven't been great in the defensive third, and have been conceding consistently. Coming into this game, however, both sides' numbers in attack have been good. They rarely fail to score, and our prediction for Coventry City v Manchester United is for both teams to score.
